How Much Sleep Should Your Baby and Kids Be Getting?

December 26, 2022

“I, by pure mistake, let my 4-year-old watch his favorite Spider-man movie late at night. When the movie ended at 1:30, he put his Spiderman pyjamas on and was ready to save the world! He had so much energy! And went to sleep at 3 in the morning! He didn’t go to school the next day because of a headache. No permissions for movie nights anymore,” says Rachel, a teacher in Mumbai.

Believe us when we say, nothing is worse than your baby not getting enough hours of sleep. Watching TV right before bedtime made it hard for Rachel’s son to go to sleep, and what did he get out of it? A headache severe enough to skip school!

Inadequate sleep and unhealthy bedtime habits for your baby can make your life very hard. Children who don’t get enough sleep are irritated, suffer mood swings, have trouble paying attention, and suffer from other health and learning problems. It can even meddle with their brain development.

With all these problems to fuss over for new parents, not knowing how to handle them can do their head in. We’re here to help you. This is how much sleep babies should be getting depending on their age:

Newborn to 2 months

You might have to wait quite a bit for playtime with your little munchkin because a newborn babies sleep around the clock and don’t have a sense of day and night. A 2-month baby’s sleeping hours will range from 14 to17 hours over a 24-hour period. Some newborns may even sleep up to 18 to19 hours a day!
In between their sleep, they will wake up every 3-4 hours to feed.
Newborns pee even more than they crave snack time, that is every 1 to 3 hours, so don’t forget to change their diapers when they get wet. A wet diaper can interfere with your baby’s sleep, and they’ll wake you up even more often at night! Letting a wet diaper stay for too long can also cause rashes to your baby’s sensitive skin. 2 to 4 Months

A baby of 2 to 4 months’ age will still need about 14 to 17 hours of sleep a day and their sleeping pattern doesn’t change much from the first two months of their life.
There’s good news! A 3-month baby’s sleeping hours start to align more with your sleeping cycle. Their night time sleeping stretches will start to become longer and can go up to 5 to 6 hours. Parents can finally catch their much deserved beauty sleep.

4 to 6 Months

A 4 to 6-month baby’s’ sleep time should range from 12 to 16 hours a day. This includes at least two naps during the day and a long stretch of sleep during the night. The average amount of daytime naps are 3 to 4 hours. By the end of the 6th month, most babies will sleep for 9 hours or even longer during the night! We heard all parents take a sigh of relief.

6 to 12 Months

Most babies this age should get between 12 to 16 hours of sleep per day, including a stretch of 9 to 12 hours of sleep at night. They will most probably take two naps a day, and the nap time can range anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Notice how their sleep patterns are becoming shorter and more condensed? They really do grow up fast!

1 to 2 Years

Between the age of 1 to 2 years, most kids will need only about 11 to 14 hours of sleep per day, including one or two daytime naps. Most kids around this age will condense their two naps into one afternoon nap so that they can get more time to be playing games with you! During this time, they’ll always be too busy trying to walk, running into corners, picking up unwanted things off the floor to put in their mouth. And just always be bustling with energy like the little drop of sunshine that they are.

2 to 5 Years

Kids between these ages should get about 10 to13 hours of sleep a day including naps. Actually, they won’t even need naps, most kids will skip their naps all-together because sleeping is just wasting time doing nothing for them! Who wants to sleep when they can be wreaking havoc, right?!
Kids also learn to follow regular sleep time-tables during these ages and fall into a routine. This period is the best time for you to teach your kids healthy bed-time habits, make full use of it!

For kids of all ages, stick to a regular bedtime that allows to get them the full hours of sleep needed during their age. If your kid is having trouble sleeping, start with creating a bedroom environment that is peaceful, calm and comfortable; try to minimize all the distractions like TV and electronic devices before going to bed to help them fall asleep sooner. If your kid still can’t sleep, have them do their math home-works, that should do the trick! Just kidding! Kids so young as these barely know how to count.
