As a new parent you will have all sorts of questions and anxieties about your little one’s health. Is giving them formula milk a good idea? What should be their bedtime? How many times do they need a bath in a week? Is that a rash on their skin!?
The questions are endless, but you will learn all the answers along the way. Parenting is not a linear process, you will make mistakes, learn from them, be prepared with research next time which might work sometimes, other times it might not. And that is okay.
Knowledge is power for a new parent. Here are five basic things you must know about your baby’s skincare:
- Baby Oil and Massage – You can give your baby massages with coconut oil, mustard oil, olive oil or any other oil that is used in your geographic location to give babies massages. Massages can help babies relax and improve their sleep. If your baby has caught a cold, give them a hot oil massage for some relief. Massages have been used for generations to promote healthy bone development in babies. Should I give my baby massage before or after bath? Give them one before every bath, more frequently during their initial months.
- Bath Time – There is such a thing as too clean. A baby is who is less than a year old, doesn’t need to be bathed frequently. In fact, three times in a week is more than enough. You may dry out their sensitive skin if you bathe them too often. During winters, you can decrease their number of baths even more.
- Diapering Basics – A few diapering basics that you need to know are as follows:
- Throw away disposable diapers after a single use.
- Wash reusable diapers thoroughly and use a medically certified disinfectant before putting it on your baby. You might need a baby oil cloth too if you use reusable diapers for your baby.
- Any regular diaper should be able to take at least three cycles of urine. So, change diapers every 2-3 hours. Seems impossible? Try Snuggy Diapers for newborn babies. Made with a rapid absorption layer so your baby needs less diaper changes.
- If a diaper is soiled with poop, change it immediately.
- Clean and air the diaper area after every diaper change.
- Be Mindful of Products – When it comes to your baby’s sensitive skin, don’t go overboard with a seventeen- step Korean skincare routine. Less is more. If you feel the need to use baby care products, let your baby’s doctor prescribe a few. In general, avoid products that contain dyes and perfumes.
- Watch Out for the Weather – Baby skin care in winter is different from baby skin care during summer. During summer, use cotton clothes, stay indoors as much as possible, use soothing lotions with aloe vera, nutgrass, almond oil, etc. During winters, you need to shorten their bath times, moisturize their skin often, dress them in warm, wooly clothes.
