Can we get real for a moment? All babies are cute babies, until they start to cry. Dealing with crying babies is not a child’s play. And if you’re a new parent, it probably is going to be a while till you start to understand baby gibberish.
How to Stop a Baby from Crying?
Here are a few things you can try to comfort a crying baby. We’re giving you a heads up: It’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be really hard. But, keep calm and pray to the heavens above that one of these things work.
- Swaddling a baby helps them calm down and feel secured. Use a large, thin blanket for this.
- Your baby might be crying their lungs out because their little body is having trouble digesting what they had. Lay them on their left sides and keep rubbing their back. After each feeding, remember to burp your baby.
- The loud, blaring noises of the world freak little babies out. Turn off the TV, and play a calming sound. Babies find white noise really calming, just look up ‘white noise baby’. You can also try the recording of a heartbeat or just lay their heads down close to your heart and rub their backs.
- Rock your baby or walk with them in your arms. These motions remind babies of the movements they felt when they were inside their mother’s womb.
- Wait for at least 2 hours between each feeding. Just like us babies too feel uneasy when they are fully stuffed, so avoid overfeeding them.
- If it is not yet time for a feeding, offer them the pacifier, babies find sucking soothing.
Keep an eye on what you’re having, if you breastfeed your baby. Chances are your baby is sensitive to some foods you’re having.
If you use formula milk, consult your doctor on what can be done to make your baby less fussy.
Baby Needs Checklist
Here are a few more things your baby might be upset about to know by heart, and what you can do to help them:
- Wet or soiled – Your baby most probably is cranky because they are lying in a puddle of their own poo or pee inside the diaper. This never happens to a Snuggy baby, because Snuggy mothers know: Poora Neela Toh Diaper Geela. Snuggy diapers are equipped with a smart wetness indicator that tells you when a diaper change is needed.
Diapers need to be changed every 2-3 hours, regardless or immediately if they have pooped.
- Hungry – Your baby needs their food! Keep track of when your baby was last fed. Lip smacking, sucking thumbs, moving fists to mouth is baby code for hunger.
- Cold or hot – It might be a little chilly out, but that doesn’t mean your baby needs to be dressed in ten layers of woolen clothing. To make your baby comfortable, dress them in about the same layers of clothing you wear. Always check for shivers from cold or sweating due to heat and improvise accordingly.
- Spitting up or vomiting a lot – Contact your child’s doctor immediately if your baby throws a fit after feeding, has excessive spitting or vomiting, and is losing weight. Some babies’ gastroesophageal reflux (GER) can be confused with fussiness.
- Overstimulated – Just like us, babies get too overwhelmed with their surroundings sometimes. Try to soothe them by trying a few tricks we mentioned earlier in this article.
- Bored – Did you know that babies throw a fit when they’re bored sometimes? Very devious, your little one! Hum a song to your baby, go for a walk, give them toys to play with or something they haven’t seen before to engage their interest.
Why do babies cry at night?
Your baby might be crying at night because they have already had their beauty sleep during day time. Your baby’s daytime naps shouldn’t exceed more than three hours.
That or they are hungry. Yes, your baby is developing and growing at a rapid rate. Chances are they are crying because they are hungry again.
You baby might be crying because they have wet their diapers. Use Snuggy, the best nighttime diapers for newborn babies that absorb wetness at a rapid fast speed. Try Snuggy to keep your baby from waking up at night!
It is okay to feel frustrated and mentally and physically spent sometimes. If you have been trying to calm them down but nothing seems to be working, lay them down gently and distance yourselves. Babies are fragile creatures; a single little jerk can injure them greatly. Pick them up only after you are feeling calm and composed.
Go take a walk, hum a soothing melody, count till you feel in control of your actions or lay down for a while. Once you’ve done this and your baby is still upset retry soothing methods or ask a trusted person to step in for you.
If you’re struggling right now, don’t worry! You will soon learn what each jerk of the head, leg twitch and hum means. Give it time and be patient. 🙂
